Harbur Design: from parks to holiday homes

Harbur Design can help you transform your holiday park with some clever thinking and offer an experienced team who have worked on many projects within the leisure park sector. Here, Daniel from the team speaks to editor Victoria Galligan about their work…

Could you tell us a little about your team and Harbur Design’s history…

Harbur Design is an Architectural Design & Services company working in all sectors but we have vast experience in the leisure and residential industries. Officially launched at the start of 2018, Harbur Design was formed by Daniel Burns (myself) and Lloyd Harden. Having a combined experience of over 23 years in the design fields, we thought that by starting our own company, we could offer something to clients that most other architectural practices can’t: experience in the caravan, park and leisure industry. Knowing how parks operate, how the homes are made and how to work with planning, our schemes are designed to avoid the issues that most other practices face along the way.

What type of services do you offer to holiday parks?

From basic Conceptual Sketches to full Virtual Reality tours, we really offer everything. From start to finish we will be there as little or as much as you need to support through the whole planning process and we can even design the homes to go in your park, too, breaking away from the ‘standard’ lodges most manufacturers offer. We’ve invested heavily in software enabling us to offer some of the highest quality computer generated imagery and have the technology to maximise on marketing and generate that interest and investment at an earlier stage. Being able to 3D model an entire park gives us a huge advantage in maximising on views, playing with levels and the foresight of issues most others find at construction stage which can be very costly.

Could you give us an example of your work in a holiday park?

Absolutely, although the majority of our work is under Non Disclosure Agreements until the owners launch their parks as privacy and professionalism is of the upmost importance to us. However, a project which we can discuss is that of a new development for Leisure Resorts. We were approached by Grant Gidman, marketing director, who had a site layout already done but had no marketing material to launch their site.

We were able to model the entire site, work with the manufacturers of which are providing the lodges to have them modelled to their exact look and from there, create a 3D interactive map where the user can click on individual points of the site and which takes them to that exact location and allows them to explore this future site at their own pace and see for themselves the what the end result of the site will be. Words do not do it justice – so you’ll have to see it on our website!

Through modelling we were able to look for areas which can be improved by optimising the views in the original design which couldn’t be seen from black and white on paper and adjust accordingly. Now Grant has seen what we can do and the benefits to the design as well the marketing material, he’s coming to us for future work. Over 80% of our work is through referrals and we’ve been growing exponentially since we started.

What would you say are the biggest challenges facing holiday parks in terms of design at the moment, and how can Harbur Design help?

A difficulty a lot of land owners face is getting the planning permission for their park development. Getting planners to understand what the proposed scheme will look like and the positive impact it can have plays a huge part in planning permission being granted. Having the knowledge and experience in this process helps significantly and then the added benefit of being able to produce near Photo-Realistic CGIs of a proposed development takes away any need of imagination by the planners and can really sell the park.
