Why caravan park owners need to invest in broadband to reap huge future business benefits. Beyond the ongoing debate about Brexit, statistics are telling a sunny story for the UK’s travel and tourism sector. 

Annual statistics released in July this year by both Visit Britain and the Office for National Statistics revealed that a record-breaking 39.2 million visits were made by overseas tourists to the UK in 2017, with the latest domestic ‘staycation’ figures showing that residents across Great Britain took a total of 120.7 million overnight visits to destinations in England, Scotland and Wales in 2017.

This boom in the travel and tourism sector is reflected in the rising demand for ‘experiential’ holidays, glamping, and other quirky holiday lets.

Internet service provider Airband specialises in providing superfast wireless or fibre connectivity to remote areas, especially caravan parks where bespoke systems are often recommended.

Airband’s range of solutions, are generally available with support from DCMS under the Gigabit voucher scheme, which UK government launched in March 2018. 

Gigabit vouchers can be used by small businesses and the local communities surrounding them to contribute to the installation cost of a gigabit-capable connection.

Airband marketing manager, Simon Britton, points out that broadband is now regarded as the ‘fourth utility service’ and holiday makers are expecting a robust broadband service as standard. 

“The gold standard would be a dedicated broadband connection for each ‘premises’,” said Simon. 

“Where that’s not possible, we suggest that park owners consider options including a stronger central wifi hotspot, or even an internet café with some vending machines as an additional revenue stream,” he said.

“Better broadband will make your park easier to market, and your visitors will be able to stream video and enjoy the latest Netflix offerings.

“Additionally, the rise of flexible working patterns makes it more likely that some holidaymakers will combine work with pleasure and they are going to be selecting a holiday destination based on whether it offers fast broadband or not, so it’s something you really need to get right or you’re likely to be left behind,” said Simon. 

Investing in decent broadband for your caravan park makes it more attractive to new and existing customers, especially with younger digital natives who expect robust broadband as standard.
