Tips for preparing your caravan to be towed
As a great British pastime, every year thousands of holidaymakers pack up their caravans and head down to the coast for a mini-break, enjoying everything that some of our beautiful seaside towns have to offer. The greatest things about caravaning are the flexibility and home comforts, but how should you prepare your trailer before towing it? Read on for some top tips on making your trailer safe and towable for your journey. Check your licence Before you start planning your trip, you’ll need to make sure that you are actually able to tow a caravan. It may sound silly, but if your caravan usually sits on a caravan site you may not have had to tow it before. In summary: If you passed your test before 1 January 1997:Combined weight of car and caravan outfit up to 8,250kg. If you passed your test after 1 January 1997:Combined weight of car and caravan outfit up to 3,500kg. Over 70 years of age (provided licence obtained before 1 January 1997):Only vehicles that can be safely towed by a 3,500kg towing vehicle. Additionally, if you want to tow anything heavier, you’ll need to take a B+E test or a C1+E test depending on the requirements. Pack it correctly Your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity should be listed in your car’s handbook so always make sure you find this out before you start packing, weighing any items such as bikes, portable TVs and barbeques that you plan on taking. Overloading your caravan or packing it incorrectly can cause real problems while you’re driving such as accelerating and climbing hills, plus the heavier it is the more unstable it becomes. The heaviest items should be placed as low as possible over the caravan’s wheels, as storing anything too close to the front of the caravan will cause unnecessary pressure on your car’s rear suspension. Following this, medium weighing items should be placed within the middle of the caravan and the lightest items at the top in overhead storage. Extra tips ● Never carry passengers in the caravan when it’s being towed. ● To prevent the caravan from becoming unstable, make sure you have a well-matched car and caravan. ● Water can be extremely heavy, so try and pack enough for the journey and fill your supply back up once you’ve reached your destination or campsite. ● You must have towing mirrors attached to your wing mirrors so you have full visibility. Another First For The Spa Leisure Industry
Park Leisure Solutions Ltd announced the launch of a brand new, all in one Spa Water Auto-fill, Quality Monitoring and In Line Treatment System. The new Auto-fill and chemical dosing system, coupled with their award winning Climacube system offers Park Operators the complete solution for their spa operation and maintenance, ensuring the most cost effective way to fill, heat, dose and drain the spas. HSE Guidelines for Holiday Park Hot Tubs and Spas recommend twice daily monitoring of the chemical and pH balance of your Hot Tub(s) to determine free chlorine levels, fixed chlorine levels, pH and alkalinity. Ensuring safe use for customers and where necessary treating water and dosing the Hot Tub according to the measurement results. In addition, to make the most effective use of your chemical dosing, which will save money, help the environment, and provide customers with a more enjoyable hot tub experience, tracking the Hot Tub’s temperature and UV exposure can be extremely beneficial. However within a park environment, can also be very time consuming and costly. That’s why Park Leisure Solutions Limited has developed, and now offer the new monitoring and delivery system. The new System will, in real time, monitor everything for you automatically, sending updates about the Hot Tub’s chemical dosing needs over your WiFi network or Smartphone, from anywhere in the world. The new system will auto adjust the dosing levels in line to create the correct water balance for the Hot Tub or you can adjust remotely if required. Once installed the System is quick and easy to use. They suggest on changeover days adding a Chlorogene tablet ten minutes before emptying the water, which ensures the spas are 100% sanitized and kills biocides and legionella that could potentially be left in the pipe work on drain down which could carry in to the new water being filled. Then simply switch the System on and leave the Spa to auto fill and dose ready for use. Either manual or smart monitoring is available depending the installation requirements. Fitted to 1, 5, 10, 50 or even 100 + Hot Tubs or Spas the System can remotely monitor, track, record and inline dose each individual Hot Tub in real time and produce the necessary performance data for both maintenance and health and safety departments when required. Saving man hours on change over days and monitoring, taking the guesswork out of your Hot Tub or Spa maintenance, leading to more efficient and effective dosing for your Hot Tubs, saving time and money and providing a safer environment for customers.
Caravan Park Facilities Hit New and Improved Heights
Toilet and shower facilities on caravan parks have come a long way since the 60s and 70s. None more so than those at one of Lincolnshire’s most popular parks. Far from the draughty concrete blocks of the past, the architecturally designed shower complex at Lakeside Park, North Somercotes is more akin to a luxury spa resort or an ocean-going cruise liner. With ambient lighting, individual glass-fronted shower cubicles, back-lit mirrors, state-of-the-art fittings and climate control, the new complex must be the most advanced facility of its kind in the UK and perhaps Europe. There is also a wet room for visitors with disabilities as well as a specially designed toddler bath. The eco-friendly building was designed to blend with the landscape and is largely sustainable with ground source underfloor heating and harvested rainwater WCs. Samantha Heap, director of Don Amott Parks explained: “It’s all about giving our visitors a memorable experience and facilities that match, or even surpass, those at home. “Touring caravan and motorhomes owners do have their own basic and rather cramped facilities but at Lakeside they have the opportunity and space to pamper themselves in luxurious surrounding.” Besides the new shower complex, which cost over three quarters of a million pounds and took six-months to build, Lakeside Park prides itself on the rest of its facilities. There’s literally something for everyone, from tiny tots to grandma and granddad. It features an indoor swimming complex with sauna, solarium and steam room, a restaurant, bars, a cabaret room and a fitness suite. Outdoors there are all-weather sporting facilities including tennis, bowls, five-a-side football as well as a nine-hole golf course and a 7-acre fishing lake. The touring park at Lakeside was fully booked over the prime summer holiday months and bookings are already being taken for 2020. Lakeside Park is close to the village of North Somercotes, just 12 miles from Louth. For touring and motorhome booking or more information you can visit www.lakesidepark.co.uk
Millennials could turn the tide for seaside resorts
The National Coastal Tourism Academy (NCTA) has worked with market research consultancy BVA BDRC to identify the specific intentions and motivations of British holidaymakers to the coast to help address key challenges facing seaside resorts; the findings are published in a comprehensive Holiday Trends 2019 report. It finds that Millennials, the important 22 to 37-year old age group, are the least likely age cohort to visit the coast, seeing it as ‘old-fashioned’ but whilst being reluctant to take a seaside break, this age group is the most likely to holiday in the UK, highlighting an urgent need for coastal resorts to target this sector to reverse their perceptions. Nevertheless, the report brings positive news for addressing one of the coast’s biggest challenges – seasonality; of the 1,000 polled, 28% believe some activities are at their best in winter with 51% saying the coast offers activities year-round. Breaks most likely to provide winter appeal include learning a new skill, volunteering, food and drink and history and culture, these are followed by an interest in wellness, nature and wildlife escapes. Notably, Millennials show a particular interest in these activities, suggesting that coastal destinations that provide them may offer a gateway to attracting this generation. “This latest report backs up last year’s research which shows young people are missing out on huge opportunities to holiday on the coast because of lack of awareness, but they don’t dismiss a break to the seaside out of hand,” says NCTA Academy Director Samantha Richardson. “It’s crucial that coastal resorts attract this age group if they are to thrive as successful tourist destinations long-term. They have grown up with low-cost airfares and budget accommodation plus a strong desire to travel globally without knowing what is right on their door-step. “Unless they discover the English coast’s beauty, the rugged cliff-tops and castles of Northumberland and Yorkshire, seal-spotting and nature on the east coast to the water sports and cultural towns in the south and south west, this will be a lost generation.” The report says all types of domestic breaks have increased in popularity since 2017 but seaside breaks have seen the biggest overall jump. Jon Young, Research Director from BVA BDRC adds, “The millennial age cohort tends to be open to new ideas, and so negative perceptions of the coast can be easily turned around. This age group tends to be drawn to unique, immersive, shared and transformational experiences, with Instagrammable opportunities a must. The English coast can provide these experiences in spades (although the bucket may be a bit too old-fashioned these days).” You can download the report at www.holidaytrends2019.com
Roseberry View Case Study
The Kingston Park and Leisure Homes Way – How personal service and a radical new approach is taking the lodge market by storm. With the launch of the absolutely stunning Palazzo and a brand-new model to be unveiled at The Lawns, we sat down with Kingston Park and Leisure Homes who have been setting the benchmark for quality and luxury in 2019’S lodge market. Speaking to Kris Robinson, the Commercial Director, he talked us through a recent project at Roseberry View to show how the company’s radical approach to customer service and build quality help get this brand-new park off the ground. Here’s what he said… “At Kingston Park and Leisure Homes, we like to do things a little differently. By putting customer service at the heart of all of our processes and systems we ensure we always live up to our motto – on time, in full and error free. We think this approach pays off and provides a real point of difference for us against our competitors. In the case of Roseberry View, it started with an introduction to Andy, the park owner, and conversation about what his vison for the park was and how we could help. Once we met in person it was clear that Andy had a particular vison for his park and a standard ‘off the shelf’ lodge wasn’t going to cut it for him. Our first meeting was at Staxton Vale where we have two show lodges – The Affinity and The Liberty, but we arranged a return meeting at our factory in Hull so we could really show him our full range and how we do things differently. One of the first things we talked about at the factory was our Unique Customisation Framework. It provides thousands of options for clients so they can stamp their park’s unique identity onto the lodges, which in Andy’s case was ideal as he had a really strong vision for Roseberry View. I also took the opportunity to explain how we focus on the small details and how these add up into noticeable sense of quality as you walk through the door of any Kingston lodge. Things like domestic style internal walls that can be painted with emulsion, our proprietary wall insulation technique and other unique construction methods. Andy also mentioned that whilst in Hull, he would also be looking at some of our competitors. Whilst it may seem counter intuitive, we recommend people do shop around and see what’s out there on the market. However, what we do know is that clients won’t get better personalised customer service, the highest construction standards and better value for money than they do here at Kingston. After the end of the factory meeting, we always make a point of booking a return meeting so the team can assess the site, visualise how the lodges will be sited and see if we can help with any extra amenity buildings. Due to our background in the modular construction industry, we can construct just about any building that a holiday park would require from toilet blocks to restaurants. After the site visit, we entered the negotiation phase. Andy is a great businessman and tough negotiator but after a few days we agreed price, terms and an initial order of 10 Tranquility lodges. Unlike some of the larger chains, here at Kingston we have the ability to do a deal that’s beneficial to all parties. At this stage we also provided our trademark guaranteed delivery dates. We understand how costly, both financially and emotionally, delays can be for park owners and operators. Our guaranteed delivery dates not only give customers peace of mind but enables them to start enjoying their new homes straight away or start generating a return on their investment as soon as possible. Once the order was placed, Andy and his entourage visited us again to really delve deep into the design of his new lodges. Whilst they loved the Tranquillity’s layout and design, Andy’s park vision had a unique set of requirements which involved a number of changes to the base model. Using our Unique Customer Framework, we developed a design scheme that was perfect for Andy and ultimately, something unique to Roseberry View. Before production started, we sent our expert access and siting team to assess the site and ensure that any protentional hiccups were dealt with before they became a real issue. The first batch of five lodges were manufactured in March and delivered to the site in May. The second batch of five were constructed in May/June and delivered in June.” We also spoke to Andy Platts, the owner of Roseberry View, to see what he thought of the process… “It was great to deal with Kris and the team and you could really tell that they were all committed to doing right by the customer. They helped myself the team at every step of the process even going as far as driving me to a local tile shop when we were designing the bathroom! Overall I’m really happy with the finished lodges and wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them to anyone.” With attention to detail, stunning quality and personal customer service at every step, it’s easy to see why these relative new comers are making a splash in the market.
