As with trees and hedging, it’s important to firstly select shrubs suitable to the conditions on your site and to the localised planting position, such as soil type, drainage, exposure to wind or salt, shade or bright sunlight, etc…. and not to forget the possibility of potential damage from rabbits. Then consider the purpose of the shrub planting to select bushes with appropriate size and growth rate, any potential issues regarding thorns or berries, and even to consider colour schemes or themes. Don’t forget to also consider seasonality: if your site is only open from April to October then there’s no need to limit yourself to only planting evergreen shrubs, if your site is likely to host specific events then you may choose more shrubs which flower at that time of year, or you may choose a planting scheme in an area where you host winter festivities which can be decorated accordingly for that – the specific demands of your site will be individual to your business but the principles remain the same.
